Springs, Cables & Tracks
Spring, cable, and track work — the heart of the door.
The springs do the lifting; the cables and drums keep it even; the tracks keep it honest. When any of the three fails, the door becomes three hundred pounds of dead weight. This is the one category of garage door work that is genuinely not a DIY job — torsion springs under load cause serious injuries every year.

Why Connecticut winters snap springs
Why Connecticut winters snap springs
Steel contracts in the cold, and an aging spring's microfractures give way — which is why the season's first hard freeze is the busiest week of the year for spring calls. Builder-grade springs are 10,000-cycle parts: roughly seven to ten years of normal use. We quote both standard and 25,000-cycle upgrades, and on two-spring doors we recommend replacing the pair — the survivor has the same mileage as the one that just let go.
Cables and tracks: the early-warning system
Frayed cable strands and rust bloom at the bottom brackets are the door telling you a failure is coming. Shoreline homes from Milford to Guilford see cable corrosion years ahead of inland houses. Track work — dents, spread, out-of-plumb verticals — gets measured and reset rather than bent back by eye, because a track that 'looks about right' wears every roller in the system.

Common questions
How do I know if my spring is broken?
A loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coil above the door, a door too heavy to lift, or an opener that strains and gives up. Any of those: stop and call — don't keep running the opener.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
On a two-spring door, yes. Both springs have identical mileage, and a second service call costs more than the second spring.
What's the difference between 10,000 and 25,000-cycle springs?
Cycle rating is lifespan — one open plus one close is a cycle. The 25,000-cycle upgrade costs modestly more per spring and lasts two to three times longer; both options are quoted side by side.
