What you may notice
One lift cable may hang beside the track, coil loosely near the top drum, or lose tension while the opposite side stays tight. The door may stop crooked, wedge in the opening, or sit on the floor with slack cable visible on one side.

Why it happens
A cable can leave its drum after the door is lifted unevenly, a spring loses tension, a cable frays or stretches, a drum shifts, a bottom fixture is damaged, or the door hits an obstruction and the cable unloads. Putting the cable back without correcting the reason it unloaded usually recreates the problem.
The lift cable belongs in the drum's grooves. A loose or crossed run can accompany an uneven door. Keep clear and stop using the opener when this is visible.

- Photograph both drums, both cables, and the door position from a safe distance; this helps preserve the failure pattern before anything moves.
- Disconnect power to prevent accidental opener activation, but do not pull the manual release if the door is hanging or crooked.
- Look for frayed strands, rust, a shifted drum, or a bent bottom bracket without touching them.
Is it safe to keep using the door?
Do not grab, cut, wind, or pull a loose cable. Do not loosen the bottom bracket or cable drum set screws. Spring torque can remain in the system and can move hardware suddenly. A crooked door can also drop or leave the track when its restraint changes.

The repair secures the door, removes spring tension in a controlled way, inspects both cables and drums, corrects the underlying spring, alignment, obstruction, or hardware problem, and installs matched cables if wear is present. The cables are then set evenly and the door is balanced through full manual travel before the opener runs it.

Can the same cable simply be put back on the drum?
Only after it is inspected and the reason it came off is corrected. A kinked, frayed, rusted, or stretched cable should not be reused, and the opposite cable needs inspection too.
Why is the door crooked when a cable comes off?
Each cable lifts one side. If one loses tension while the other continues to pull, the door racks in the opening and can bind its rollers in the tracks.
Should I pull the manual release?
Not while the door is crooked, hanging, or partly open. Disconnecting the opener can remove one restraint and allow an unstable door to move unexpectedly.
