Garage Door Problems

My garage door is crooked or one side is higher.

The bottom seal is not parallel with the floor, one side rises first, a roller binds, or the door stops at an angle. You may also see a loose cable on the low side or hear a sharp pop before the door changes position.

The symptom

What's actually wrong

A sectional door must be lifted evenly at both bottom corners. A cable that leaves a drum, a frayed cable, a shifted drum, a broken spring, a damaged roller, or a track obstruction can take one side out of sync. The rigid door sections then rack between two tracks that are no longer carrying equal load.

Homeowner checks

What you can check safely

  • Stop the door where it is and keep the opening clear.
  • Compare cable tension visually on both sides and look for a roller outside the track without touching the hardware.
  • Check the floor and track path for an object that may have interrupted one side of travel.
  • Photograph the angle and hardware position for the technician before the door settles or moves again.

Before you touch anything

Do not try to straighten a crooked door with the opener, by pushing one corner, or by loosening track and cable hardware. The door can release from a bind suddenly. Do not stand beneath it or park in its path.

How we repair it

The door is first supported so it cannot fall or rack further. The technician then checks cables, drums, springs, rollers, hinges, track position, and section damage. After the failed parts and alignment are corrected, cable tension is equalized and the door is tested by hand before opener travel is restored.

Common questions

Can a crooked garage door fall?

It can become unstable, especially if a roller leaves the track or one lift cable is no longer supporting its side. Treat a partly open crooked door as an overhead load.

Could the track alone be bent?

Yes, but a bent track is only one possibility. Cable tension, rollers, drums, hinges, and spring balance all need to be checked before the track is adjusted.

Why did it become crooked after hitting an object?

One side may have stopped while the other continued, unloading a cable or forcing a roller and track out of alignment.

Also worth checking

A level door is a system result; forcing one corner only hides which side stopped lifting.
