My garage door makes a grinding noise.

  • With the door closed, disconnect the opener and move the door slowly by hand; listen for the same noise at the same position.

  • Check whether the opener chain is sagging or striking the rail, but do not adjust it without the model instructions.

Is every grinding noise an opener gear problem?

Can a chain that is too loose make noise?

Yes. A loose or overly tight chain can create sprocket and rail noise. Adjustment measurements are model-specific and should follow the opener manual.

Will lubricant solve a grinding sound?

Only if the source is a serviceable friction point. Lubricant will not repair a worn roller, damaged bearing, bent track, stripped gear, or misaligned door.
