My garage door opens a few inches, then stops.
The bottom section lifts roughly six inches to a foot, then the opener stops or reverses. Sometimes the door closes normally afterward; other times it remains suspended until you press the control again.

The opener may be sensing more resistance than expected, or it may not be receiving reliable movement feedback. Common causes include a broken or weak spring, an out-of-balance door, a binding roller or track, incorrect force or travel settings, a slipping drive part, or an internal RPM or encoder fault.

- Close the door fully, disconnect the opener, and lift the door slowly by hand. A balanced door should move smoothly without a dramatic change in weight.
- Watch both sides from a safe distance for a roller that sticks, a cable that changes tension, or a section that catches at the same height.
- Run the disconnected opener once and see whether the trolley travels normally without the door attached.
- Record any diagnostic LED pattern before unplugging the opener.
Before you touch anything
Do not change force settings until the door is proven to move freely. Do not stand under a partially open door while diagnosing it. A door that stops low can still fall if its counterbalance or cable system is failing.

Is a broken spring likely if the door still lifts a few inches?
Yes. The opener can sometimes start a spring-dead door before its protection stops the motor. A visible spring gap or a very heavy hand test makes the spring system the leading concern.
What if the trolley moves normally with the door disconnected?
That points back to door weight or mechanical resistance rather than the opener's ability to travel along the rail.
Can cold weather cause this symptom?
Cold can reveal hardened lubricant, stiff rollers, or an aging spring, but temperature should not be used to dismiss a door that is heavy or out of balance.
