What do my garage door sensor lights mean, and are they aligned?

The door refuses to close, reverses, or closes only while the wall button is held. One photo-eye may be dark, flicker, blink red, glow amber or yellow, or show a different color from the sensor across the opening. The color alone is not a universal diagnosis: Chamberlain and LiftMaster commonly use an amber sending sensor and green receiving sensor, while other brands and generations use different colors and blink patterns. The useful evidence is the opener model, which LED is steady or changing, and whether blocking the beam changes the receiving indicator predictably.

Safety reversing sensors must have power, correct wiring, a clear line of sight, stable brackets, and alignment that survives vibration through the full door cycle. Dust, cobwebs, stored objects, bent brackets, sunlight, loose terminals, damaged low-voltage wire, reversed conductors, a failed sensor, or a control-board fault can interrupt the signal. Both lights can appear steady while the door is still because track vibration or a marginal connection causes the receiving signal to flicker only during closing. A binding door can also reverse even when the sensor system is healthy.

What you can check safely

  • Find the opener model label and use its sensor chart; do not apply one brand's green, amber, yellow, orange, or red meaning to another system.
  • Clear the entire beam path, wipe both lenses with a soft dry cloth, and verify that boxes, pull ropes, vehicle parts, and stored items cannot cross the beam.
  • Watch both LEDs while the door attempts to close. A receiving light that flickers with track vibration points to marginal alignment, bracket movement, or wiring.
  • Inspect visible low-voltage wire for cuts, crushed insulation, loose staples, reversed connections, corrosion, or an open splice without opening a powered motor enclosure.
  • Test whether direct morning or evening sunlight changes the receiving LED, and use only manufacturer-approved positioning or shielding.

Before you touch anything

Photo-eyes are an entrapment-protection device, not an optional convenience. Do not bypass them to restore remote closing. On models that permit constant pressure at the wired wall control as a temporary supervised close method, the operator must keep the entire opening in view and release the control if anyone enters. Disconnect opener power before repositioning or servicing sensor hardware, and perform the manufacturer's reversal test after any alignment or wiring repair.

The repair identifies the exact sensor family, verifies installation height and bracket stability, confirms sending and receiving power, checks wire polarity and continuity, aligns the beam, and observes the LEDs while the door moves. If short test wiring makes the sensors work, the permanent cable path is repaired; if correctly powered sensors do not respond, compatible sensors or control hardware are evaluated. Mechanical door resistance and opener travel are checked separately so a healthy sensor circuit is not blamed for a binding door. The final close cycle and safety-reversal tests must pass from every normal control.

Common questions

Should one garage door sensor be green and the other yellow or amber?

That is normal on many Chamberlain and LiftMaster systems: amber commonly identifies the sending unit and green the receiving unit. Other brands use different colors, so confirm the opener model before interpreting the LEDs.

What does a blinking red sensor light mean?

There is no universal red-light definition. Depending on the brand, it can report alignment, signal strength, wiring, obstruction, or another diagnostic state. Use the exact manufacturer's chart rather than replacing parts from color alone.

Why are both sensor lights on but the door still reverses?

The signal may flicker only when the track vibrates, sunlight may affect the receiver, wiring may be intermittent, or the door may be binding mechanically. Watch the lights during motion and compare the reversal point with manual door travel.

Can I bypass the garage door sensors?

They should not be defeated. Repair the obstruction, alignment, wiring, sensor, or control fault. A manufacturer-authorized constant-pressure close procedure is temporary and supervised, not a permanent bypass.
