Garage Door Problems
My garage door closes only while I hold the wall button.
A normal press starts the door down and it immediately reverses or refuses to move. If you keep continuous pressure on the wired wall control, the door may close all the way. Remote controls usually cannot perform the same override.

The mechanics behind it
On many opener models, constant wall-control pressure is a temporary close override when the safety reversing sensors are not providing an acceptable signal. The beam may be blocked, a sensor may be misaligned, sunlight may interfere with the receiver, or wiring may be loose, shorted, reversed, or damaged.

What you can check safely
- Clear the entire opening and wipe both sensor lenses with a soft dry cloth.
- Check whether both sensor LEDs are on steadily; flicker often points to slight misalignment or a loose connection.
- Follow the low-voltage sensor wires where visible and look for staples, cuts, crushed sections, or disconnected terminals without removing opener covers.
- Notice whether the condition changes with direct sunlight on one sensor.
Safety first
Holding the wall control is not a repair and should not become normal operation. It requires the person at the control to keep the full opening in view. Never bypass, tape over, relocate above the specified height, or permanently disconnect the safety sensors.
What a service visit looks like
The service visit verifies sensor placement and alignment, measures wiring continuity, repairs terminals or damaged low-voltage wire, replaces failed sensors when necessary, and then tests close travel and safety reversal. Mechanical binding is ruled out before the opener is returned to service.

Why will the remote open the door but not close it?
The opener may accept an open command while refusing a normal close command because the safety-sensor circuit is not satisfied. The wired wall control can provide a supervised temporary override on many models.
What do ten light flashes mean?
On many Chamberlain and LiftMaster models, ten flashes are associated with a safety-sensor issue. Newer models may report the condition differently, so the exact manual still controls.
Can I splice a damaged sensor wire?
Low-voltage sensor wire can often be repaired correctly, but the polarity, connection quality, routing, and final safety test matter. A damaged section hidden in a wall may require tracing rather than guessing.
