Steel is protected by galvanizing, pretreatment, primer, paint, or another finish, but scratches, chips, persistent moisture, salt, incompatible chemicals, and neglected drainage can expose metal. Paint can slow new surface oxidation after proper preparation, but it does not restore metal already lost from a cable, bottom bracket, hinge attachment, track support, or structurally weakened section.
A finish chip and metal loss at a loaded bracket are different conditions. Cosmetic touch-up cannot restore the strength of pitted or structurally weakened hardware.

Is it safe to keep using the door?

Rust remover and coating products can affect finishes, rubber seals, concrete, and nearby hardware; use only products permitted by the door manufacturer. Keep wash water and chemicals away from opener electronics and photo-eye lenses.

A service inspection separates cosmetic finish damage from structural corrosion. Surface preparation and manufacturer-compatible touch-up may be enough for a small chip on an intact steel panel.
